What is a Dry Riser? –

A dry riser is often used in large buildings with over four floors such as a hospital. It is used as apparatus to get highly pressurised water to some of the higher floors. A hose is connected to the inlet breeching valve, on the ground floor, and then another member of the fire brigade can attach another hose to the riser landing valve on one of the upper floors. This saves time trying to get a hose up to the top floors, hence saving time, money and lives. Below is an image of the apparatus we used to test a dry riser:
